Market Commentary 12/01/2023
Grains were mixed today with corn and wheat up, while the entire soy complex closed firmly lower. March Chicago was able to close above $6, the wheat bottom may be in if this momentum continues. Wheat has had 2 failed breakout from the down trend since September but this one looks promising. Corn closed 2 cents higher after pushing $4.90 during the trading session. Meanwhile the soybean complex continued to sell off on favorable South American weather forecasts. Livestock continued to sell off as well after we saw a dead cat bounce earlier in the week, the trend is firmly lower. Energies sold off today while precious metals, specifically Gold, broke all time highs at $2,095.7/ounce at the time of writing, the previous high was $2,089.2 in August 2020. It seems like broader markets are penciling in modest to aggressive interest rate cuts while inflation remains high. This is resulting in higher equity and precious metal prices while commodity sentiment remains bearish as the economy is expected and is slowing down.
Have a good weekend everyone, be sure to take a look at the carry in the market. Corn is showing a 22 cent board carry to July, while Soybeans are showing a 42 cent board carry to July. December 24 corn futures closed at $5.13 ¾ .
